Compact Photonic Crystal Polarization Beam Splitter Based on the Self-Collimation Effect

We propose a new compact polarization beam splitter based on the self-collimation effect of two-dimensional photonic crystals and bandgap characteristics. The device is composed rectangular air holes-based splitting structure circular self-collimating structure. By inserting into structure, TE TM polarized lights are orthogonally separated at their junction. When number rows in hypotenuse inserted holes 5, transmittance light 1550 nm 95.4% corresponding extinction ratio 23 dB; other hand, 88.5% 37 dB. For covering 100 bandwidth, ratios higher than 18 dB 30 dB, respectively. Compared with previous splitters, our simple, size small, high, which meets needs modern optical communications, interconnection, integrated systems.
